Inside the grain silo with Ambrook Research: Debates within U.S. farming communities
Think piece
For the fifth part of our series on debates across the world, I zoomed into the conversations inside American farming communities with Jesse Hirsch, editor of Ambrook Research, a U.S.-based farming magazine whose readers are primarily farmers. Making Nature Count: How should we value nature in our food systems?
Explainer
Natural systems are being degraded at an unprecedented rate, with rapid loss of biodiversity and an average temperature rise of almost 1.5˚C on pre-industrial levels in 2023. Most economists believe that these problems have arisen because the value of nature is not sufficiently considered in policy and economic decision-making, but within the field, different economists disagree about how to express nature's value. Spatial distribution of fishmeal and fish oil factories around the globe
Journal articles
This study identified 506 fishmeal and fish oil factories in 63 different countries, providing an open source database with locations, company names and raw material types. Fishmeal and oil is a critical input for the aquaculture sector but there is little publicly available information despite many reports of unsustainable practices such as decimating fishing stocks in countries that rely on fish as an important source of nutrients.
