Re-fashioning food systems with sustainable diet guidelines: towards a SDG 2 strategy

This report authored by By Tim Lang, Professor of Food Policy at University of London was commissioned for Friends of the Earth. It outlines the current state of policy thinking on sustainable diets and reviews some national, international and local attempts to chart new policy directions to tackle growing evidence that food consumption has immense impact on environment, health, society and economy.

It also discusses the resistance that these attempts are met with and how politicians and food industries alike seem reluctant to engage with consumers about this issue. Nevertheless the report adopts a positive outlook and emphasises the emerging evidence on ‘democratic experimentation’ whereby countries, cities, localities, sectors are developing new policies, practical initiatives and overt rather than covert choice-editing to reduce the impact of unsustainable diets.
