On 11 November 2009, Compassion in World Farming and Friends of the Earth jointly published a report entitled: Eating the planet? How we can feed the world without trashing it. The report is based on research commissioned by the two organisations, undertaken by the Institute of Social Ecology in Austria and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany, which led to the production of a much longer study entitled Eating the Planet: Feeding and fuelling the world sustainably, fairly and humanely– a scoping study.

China and UK strengthen partnership on sustainable agriculture

On 10 November 2008, the UK and Chinese governments signed a three year commitment to strengthen their growing partnership on agriculture. Hilary Benn, UK Environment Secretary, met Chinese Agriculture Minister Sun Zhengcai and signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Cooperation on Sustainable Agriculture. The Ministers also launched the Sustainable Agriculture Innovation Network (SAIN) which will help address the link between agriculture and climate change.

This paper (June 2009) is a collaboration between Deutsche Bank Climate Change Advisors and the Nelson Institute's Center for Sustainability and the Global Environment (SAGE) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW). It explores the question of how to sustainably meet the growing energy and food demands of a global population approaching nine billion people in 2050 in a sector affected by climate change.

Impacts of climate change on agriculture in South Asia and Southern Africa

In this article, published in Science in January 2008, the research team analysed climate risks and adaptation priorities for crops in 12 food-insecurre regions, basing the analysis on statistical crop models and climate projections for 2030. Their results highlight the fact that in the absence of sufficient adaptation measures, there will be negative impacts on crops grown in South Asia and Southern Africa, that are important to large food-insecure human populations.
