It argues that the externalities (consequences that affect external parties) of pig production have historically been examined in isolation, and trade-offs have never been robustly investigated. Based on 91 widely varying farms, the authors find that no particular farming type, from organic to indoor intensive, free range to woodland - performed well across all the main impact categories examined; greenhouse gas emissions, land-use, antimicrobial use and animal welfare. However, it finds that individual farms performed well across the categories. Therefore the study concludes that efforts to minimise trade-offs should focus on lowering impacts within system types rather than only changing between them. Read Image Reports Farming at the sweet spot of nature The report, produced by Nature Friendly Farming Network and the Wildlife Trust, finds that a modelled reduction of farming inputs; pesticides, fertilisers and animal feeds, would result in commercial gains for 165 UK farmers. They refer to this balancing act as the ‘Maximum Sustainable Output’ -- the point where a farm achieves maximum output while harnessing the natural resources available to it. Read Image Reports The role of seafood in UK food systems transformation This report by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) and the Marine Conservation Society argues that seafood should play a more prominent role in debates about food systems transformation in the UK. It discusses the connections between seafood and the broader food system and considers seafood’s potential role in food systems transformation in the UK, as well as analysing future visions for seafood in the UK. Read Image Books Principles of sustainable aquaculture This book is an updated and revised introduction to sustainable aquaculture practices with special attention to the social, economic and environmental issues and corresponding potential solutions. Read Image Books Countering dispossession, reclaiming land This ethnography by David E. Gilbert details the struggle of a group of Indonesian agricultural workers to reclaim their land from a nearby plantation to rebuild and restore the environment and their livelihoods. Read Image Books Regenerative strategies The authors of this book propose a new regenerative business management strategy that seeks to reduce negative environmental externalities and create new positive environmental externalities by linking climate science to management studies. Read Image News and resources Can Africa one day feed the world’s growing population? The Financial Times explores Africa's potential to shift from a major food importer to an exporter, citing challenges such as low productivity, political instability, and climate change, while also highlighting opportunities, including available arable land and a growing population willing to engage in agriculture. Read Image News and resources Which UK foods are at risk as extreme weather causes havoc with global supplies? This article from the Guardian highlights how extreme weather in the UK is impacting food supply, with low supply and high prices expected due to factors such as reduced vegetable yields from flooding, challenges with imports and food sourcing from countries facing their own climate related issues. Read Image Reports Tackling the climate-nature nexus This report from the Farm Animal Investment Risk & Return (FAIRR) initiative links financial and environmental risks associated with livestock production using the planetary boundaries framework as a benchmark. It serves as a detailed reference for investors and highlights the poor performance of the industry in addressing these issues so far. It provides a comparison of nature based and engineered key solutions to aid investors’ evaluation of their potential feasibility. Read VIEW MORE
