Chief Medical Officer: annual report 2009

The Chief Medical Officer, Liam Donaldson, has published his annual report 2009. The report draws attention to major health challenges requiring immediate action and details progress made in key areas identified in previous annual reports.

Among other things it addresses the link between climate change and health, particularly with respect to diet and transport, the moral responsibility of the UK to take a leading in addressing climate change, and the need for the NHS to reduce its own carbon footprint.

The climate change and health chapter starts on page 55 and on page 59 it talks about food, arguing that there can be both climate and health benefits arising from a reduction in consumption of animal products.
