This report, part of the UK Food Research Collaboration’s Food Brexit Briefings series, argues that the UK’s exit from the European Union will not solve the fishing industry’s problems - rather, that international fishing rules, overfishing and the UK’s own policies have contributed to those problems.

Spatial distribution of fishmeal and fish oil factories around the globe
This study identified 506 fishmeal and fish oil factories in 63 different countries, providing an open source database with locations, company names and raw material types. Fishmeal and oil is a critical input for the aquaculture sector but there is little publicly available information despite many reports of unsustainable practices such as decimating fishing stocks in countries that rely on fish as an important source of nutrients.

Tomorrow on the table: The politics and economics of food system transformation
In October 2024, TABLE brought together a diverse range of stakeholders across the food system with the aim of exploring how they envisaged a better food future, and what system transformations would be needed to get there. The participants included non-governmental and civil society organisations, policymakers, philanthropists, community leaders, and academics from diverse disciplines. Over the course of the workshop, they together discussed, developed and refined different visions for the future of the food system based on three initially conceived visions: market-led, state-led, and bottom-up.
