Soil health: a security threat profile

Soil health: a security threat profile
This report by the Food & Global Security Network, a project of Farmwel and FAI Farms, argues that soil health should be recognised as a security issue and therefore also addressed by defence departments within governments. It argues that agroecology and regenerative farming are viable options for producing food while mitigating the security threats of poor soil health.

Where now after the UN Food Systems Summit?
Tim Lang of the Centre for Food Policy reflects on the UN Food Systems Summit, which took place on 23 September 2021, in this blog post published by the Food Research Collaboration. Lang suggests that the most significant outcome of the Summit might be an “omni-framework” approach, i.e. assessing and measuring food systems on multiple fronts including diets, environment and climate, livelihoods, resilience, governance and so on.

Concentration and power in the food system
This book - which has been revised and updated since its first publication in 2016 - explores how large firms exert control over the food system, how initiatives such as microbreweries and seed saving networks are opposing these power dynamics, and how Big Data and automation might shape the food system.

The role of food environments for sustainable food systems
This policy briefing produced by the EU Food Policy Coalition provides an evidence-driven review of how food environments - i.e. the physical, economic, political and socio-cultural context in which people make decisions about consuming food - shape food demand. It argues that food environments are key to transforming the food system, by making healthy, sustainable foods the options that are the most available, accessible, affordable, enjoyable and widely promoted.

Repurposing agricultural support to transform food systems
This report by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) finds that 87% of current global government support for farming includes measures that are harmful to nature or health. It argues that redirecting - rather than eliminating - agricultural subsidies is key to making the global food system more healthy, sustainable and equitable.

Transforming food systems for rural prosperity
Reports
Transforming food systems for rural prosperity
This report from the International Fund for Agricultural Development argues that food systems need to be transformed or even “disrupted” dramatically so that everyone has access to sustainable, nutritious food. The report sees governance as key to this transformation, for example by providing incentives for agroecological and nature-based strategies, supporting smaller-scale producers, incorporating environmental costs into the pricing of food, and building partnerships between different food systems actors.

Principles and framework for food systems transformation
This report from the Global Alliance for the Future of Food sets out a framework (and a worked example of using the framework) to guide the actions of individuals and organisations working on systems transformation. The framework is built around the seven principles of the Global Alliance, which are: renewability, resilience, health, equity, diversity, inclusion, and interconnectedness.

A Sustainability Compass for food policy navigation
This paper proposes a “Sustainability Compass” that uses a hierarchical approach to define sustainability scores for four aspects of food systems: health, environment, economy and equity. The framework is designed to evaluate food policies, including by drawing attention to trade-offs and synergies across different goals. The paper suggests that the Compass can be used during agenda setting, policy formulation, decision-making and policy evaluation.
