Prisoner's labour in the US linked to hundreds of popular food brands
The Associated Press has recently reported on links between US prison force labour and major food brands such as Coca-Cola and Frosted Flakes, which are on the shelves of retailers such as Aldi, Target, and Whole Foods. The AP cites that Cargill, Bunge, Louis Dreyfus, Archer Daniels Midland and Consolidated Grain have all purchased millions of dollars worth of soy, corn, and wheat harvested by prisoners. This also directly competes with sales for local farmers.

This article focuses on the impact of gender inequality on women’s vulnerability, resilience and response to  climate change impacts. The researchers explore how patriarchal norms limit women’s access to climate-smart adaptation strategies and how policies targeted at climate action fail to overcome this structural inequality.

COP28: Reflections on an expanding international event
The UN Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Climate Change (‘COP’) has been getting steadily bigger over its almost 30-year history. Does size matter in the climate agenda, and how does the format of the conference further, or limit, its goal of international cooperation? This article considers the impact of expansion, and what it means for food systems. Ruth attended COP28 as part of a role with another organisation, Sri Lanka-based think tank SLYCAN Trust. She also attended the 2022 COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh as an employee of the Scottish Government.

COP28 UAE Declaration on Sustainable Agriculture, Resilient Food Systems, and Climate Action
The importance of addressing agriculture and food systems to achieve SDG goals for 2030 was highlighted at COP28. 159 Heads of State and Government signed a declaration which was published during COP28 in December of 2023.
