The role of visions, values and assumptions in determining the future of our food system
TABLE’s director, Tara Garnett, gave a talk at the Wageningen University & Research (WUR) symposium on the environmental impact of food systems earlier this summer. We are summarising the talk here, because it provides a good introduction to TABLE’s approach to food system debates.

Untapped Opportunities: Climate Financing for Food Systems Transformation
Reports
Climate financing for food systems transformation
This report by the Global Alliance for the Future of Food argues that public climate finance should be directed into food system transformation because of the potential to deliver cost-effective co-benefits for climate mitigation, biodiversity, health and food system resilience. Currently, food systems receive only 3% of public climate finance despite producing one third of global emissions.

Investors ask FAO for clear roadmap to sustainable food
A group of 33 institutional investors, holding over US$14 trillion assets, have written to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations to ask for a clear global roadmap for the transition to a sustainable food system by 2050. They raise concern about the financial risks to which the food system is exposed as a result of environmental damage, and ask for clear targets on emissions reduction (including methane) within each food subsector. The letter is coordinated by the FAIRR Initiative.

Creative finance for food systems transformation
This report by the Global Alliance for the Future of Food and Transformational Investing in Food Systems Initiative describes six case studies of food initiatives that have used unique investment strategies, such as a Mexican beekeeping cooperative that used loans from specialist agricultural and ethical banks that have lower interest rates than commercial banks. It also sets out five recommendations for how the investment community can support the transition to healthy, equitable food systems.

Food Systems in Nationally Determined Contributions
This report from the Global Alliance for the Future of Food presents 14 case studies of countries that have incorporated food systems into their nationally determined contributions (NDCs) towards meeting the climate goals of the Paris Agreement. It finds that most of the 14 countries have focused their climate efforts on food production as opposed to other parts of the food system such as diet, waste, processing and transport. Many of the assessed NDCs emphasise agroecology and regenerative agriculture as well as ecosystem protection. While many NDCs discuss food systems resilience in the face of climate change, few have put concrete adaptation measures in place.
