FAO: The State of Food and Agriculture 2024
A study by the FAO involving 156 countries finds that hidden costs within global food systems amount to approximately $12 trillion annually. Of this figure, around 70 percent ($8.1 trillion) arise from unhealthy dietary patterns and are linked to non-communicable diseases.

Bridging food systems and One Health
This review explores the potential of combining two significant conceptual frameworks, the food systems approach (FSA) and the One Health approach (OHA), in aiding the management of zoonotic diseases such as COVID-19. Both FSA and OHA take holistic approaches to complex problems, but the authors note they also have blind spots. The researchers seek evidence as to whether the combination of these two approaches could better manage zoonotic disease outbreaks in the future. They conclude noting that the integration of One Health and food system approaches may help overcome challenges of operationalizing One Health and lack of inclusion of health issues and zoonotic diseases in food systems.

Beef trade risks key Brazil ecosystem
BBC news has reported on recent investigations which link three major meat packing companies JBS, Minerva and Marfrig to illegal deforestation in the Cerrado of Brazil; a critical ecosystem which hosts 5% of the world’s species. The meat packing companies have denied the claims of the investigation, citing outdated data sources. Global Witness has highlighted the need for better and more transparent data in Brazil to facilitate greater accountability around deforestation.
