This report from the UK’s Vegan Society explores how policies, principles and legislation could lead towards a sustainable plant-based food system. It aims to avoid a polarised “vegans vs. farmers” narrative and instead aims to find common ground between stakeholders. It uses a “multi-criteria lens” to consider the food system from the perspectives of animal equity, human health, economy and just work, climate change and ecosystems, and social and cultural values.

This report from the Global Alliance for the Future of Food calls for action in seven areas to transform the food system. The seven areas are drawn from a synthesis of the Global Alliance’s previous dialogue events and reports. For each area, the report also presents a “Beacon of Hope” - an example of the action being successfully implemented.

This report from the United Nations Food Systems Summit synthesises the results of preparatory dialogues held by 11 UN Member States, as of 13 April 2021. The dialogues are designed to bring together a range of stakeholders in national food systems to discuss the issues faced by governments in promoting sustainable food.

This paper argues that the 2021 United Nations Food Systems Summit (UNFSS) is being used by large corporations, philanthropic organisations and export-oriented countries to take control of the narrative around food systems transformation and undermine more democratic forms of food systems governance. It analyses how the Summit was organised and how stakeholders were selected to take part.

Public engagement ahead of the 2021 United Nations Food Systems Summit has so far produced over 1,200 ideas for transforming the food system. Ideas were put forward by farmer and producer groups, indigenous communities, civil society, academics, the private sector and UN Member States. Further ideas can be submitted until 1 May 2021.

This report from PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency, co-authored by Table’s Jeroen Candel, analyses the current interface between science and policy for global food systems, identifies current gaps and weaknesses, and suggests options for improvement.

This report from IPES-Food and ETC Group maps two diverging visions for the future of food systems: business-as-usual with high dependence on data platforms, private equity firms and AI-controlled farming systems, versus the “Long Food Movement” - a food system transformation led by civil society and social movements where the emphasis is on food sovereignty and agroecology. 

This paper, co-authored by Table member Simon Lloyd, simulates the likely implications for hunger and health of subsistence farmers either using a “peasant” (agroecological) or an “entrepreneurial” (input-heavy) style of farming, under a range of scenarios for climate and policy. The paper aims to move away from approaches to food security research that focus on the quantity and quality of food available, and towards one that considers the social and political factors that influence access to food and the viability of different farming options. The study models a generic landscape that is not intended to represent a particular location.

This report, from the US think tank The Breakthrough Institute, sets out policy options for the US government to decarbonise the economy despite a polarised political climate, focusing on the energy, transport and agriculture sectors.
