In this blog post, Elin Röös continues the dialogue launched by a Sustainable Trust Fund event on the role of grazing livestock in climate change.Elin is a postdoctoral researcher at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences working for the Future Agriculture initiative at the same university, which is a strategic multidisciplinary research platform that addresses the sustainable use of natural resources with emphasis on agricultural production and food systems. Currently she is visiting the Food Group at the Environmental Change Institute at the University of Oxford, working with future scenarios for protein production and consumption, and engaged in the FCRN network.

In this piece, Johan Rockström reflects on the findings of FCRN's latest report: Grazed and confused?Johan Rockström is executive director of the Stockholm Resilience Centre and professor of environmental science at Stockholm University. Prof. Rockström has developed the Planetary Boundaries framework and is one of 20 international scientists (among them FCRN's Dr Tara Garnett) working on the EAT-Lancet Commission on healthy diets from sustainable food systems. 

In this piece, Judy Bankman introduces key elements of disease, diet, and sustainability relevant to the expansion of Western-style consumption patterns.Judy Bankman joined Brighter Green as a research intern in 2013 when she was completing her Master of Public Health at NYU’s College of Global Public Health. Working with Brighter Green allowed her to direct her academic interest into a research and policy-focused project, which linked current public health issues with food systems analysis. Her research culminated in several blog posts that were published by Food Tank and Civil Eats from 2013 to 2014, and ultimately the discussion paper published in October 2017 by Brighter Green, “Chronic Disease, Changing Diets, & Sustainability: The Globalization of Western-style Eating and Its Implications”.

In this piece, FCRN members Karin Östergren and Anne Normann comment on the trending behavioral patterns and consumer perspectives around SDG12.3, food loss and waste.Professor Karin Östergren is senior researcher at the Section for Sustainable Food Systems at RISE Agrifood and Bioscience and Adjunct Professor at Department of Food Technology, Engineering and Nutrition of Food Engineering, Lund University. For the past 17 years she has been project leader for a variety of projects focusing on exploring the benefits of combining her food process engineering expertise with environmental systems analysis. Research addressing resource efficiency and how to reduce food waste has been a focus in most of these projects. Recent projects are FUSIONS, where she was responsible for the work towards the harmonization of food waste monitoring methods and now she is also a part of the follow up project REFRESH.Anne Normann has MSc in Food Science with a background in clinical nutrition as a dietitian. She has been working at SIK/SP Food and Bioscience since 2012 as a project manager in sensory and consumer science. She mainly has been working with experimental research project in the field of consumer behavior, where the focus has been to increase the knowledge about why, how, when and where consumers make decisions about food choices and what could change that behavior. She started to work in the area of food waste in 2014 because of the Cosus project. She is now working in the department of Product & Perception at RISE Bioscience and Materials.

This blog post is by Dr Johanna Jacobi, Senior Research Scientist in the Sustainability Governance Cluster at the University of Bern’s Centre for Development and Environment. Johanna Jacobi is a geographer and biologist who has been living and working in Bolivia for six years. She currently implements research in two projects, one about 'food sustainability' (the topic of this blog), and one about 'high-quality coffee and coffee cherry value chains in the origin countries Colombia and Bolivia'. She is interested in agroecology as a science, a set of practices and a social movement and is also a member of SOCLA (Latin American Scientific Society of Agroecology). One key topic in her research activities has been agroforestry and its role in food security and the resilience of farming systems.
