Associated British Foods plc (ABF), the international food, ingredients and retail group announced in June 2007 that it has joined forces with BP and DuPont to build a world-scale biofuel plant in the UK. The ~£200 million plant will produce bioethanol from wheat and is expected to produce 420m litres (330,000 tonnes) of bioethanol a year. Production is expected to start in late 2009.

In June 2007 the Government published a consultation on the carbon and sustainability reporting requirements for biofuels. This consulation forms part of the work on the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO), which means that by 2010, 5% of all the fuel sold on UK forecourts should come from biofuels. The government expects this to save 1 million tones of carbon a year, the equivalent of taking 1 million cars off the road.

The report's co-authors, Professor Ken Peattie of Cardiff's BRASS centre, and Ben Shaw from the Policy Studies Institute argue that while recycling rates have risen, and the UK is on schedule to meet EU targets, the key to dealing with our escalating waste problem lies in changing our buying habits and our attitudes to consumption. This Economic and Social Resarch (ESRC) funded report was published in June 2007 entitled Consumption: reducing, reusing and recycling.
