The Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases - launched at the Copenhagen climate summit in December - held its first meeting in Wellington, New Zealand, in April 2010, with 28 of the 29 member states in attendance. The report, "Winds of Change: East Asia’s Sustainable Energy Future", says major investments in energy efficiency and a concerted switch to renewable sources of power in China, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam could simultaneously stabilize greenhouse gas emissions and increase energy security while improving local environments. The assessment is part of an ongoing research programme to assess the environmental implications of animal food chains, and to analyse and recommend improvement options. The immediate next step for the FAO is to use a similar approach to quantify the GHG emissions associated with specialised beef cattle and other major livestock species including buffalo, poultry, small ruminants and pigs.
