A new report from the Nature Friendly Farming Network in the UK argues that an ambitious transition to nature-friendly farming is correct way forward for farm businesses as well as for people and planet. It sets out how emphasising soil health, water management and nature on farms will help farmers navigate the growing economic and environmental pressures they face.
The NFFN has launched a major new report showing why an ambitious transition to nature-friendly farming is correct way forward for farm businesses as well as for people and planet.
The nature of business: Delivering resilience, food security and economic value through nature-friendly farming, which was launched in Westminster to mark the start of Nature Friendly Farming Week, sets out how our dominant model of conventional agriculture, with high levels of inputs including fossil fuels and chemicals, leaves farm without the resilience to climate change they need.
Instead, it sets out how emphasising soil health, water management and nature on farms will help farmers navigate the growing economic and environmental pressures they face.
In the report, NFFN farmers speak about how their nature-friendly approaches are vital for their farms' balance sheets, while private sector organisations including banks and food businesses explain how the agricultural transition is central to their future viability as well.
The report includes seven key policy asks for Government and the private sector to ensure the continued growth of nature-friendly farming. These are:
- Tackle the current funding gap to ensure nature-friendly farming is adequately and coherently resourced.
- Ensure whole-farm approaches are the norm rather than piecemeal, 'pick and mix' approaches to the practices farmers are supported to adopt.
- Tackle siloed decision-making in Government so there is a joined-up approach across departments and between the four nations of the UK.
- Make nature-related reporting requirements for businesses more ambitious.
- Develop standardised data and benchmarking so farmers can obtain investment from different sources without being burdened with different reporting requirements.
- Ensure the private sector does more to champion nature-friendly farming throughout the supply chain.
- Invest in the critical local infrastructure, such as processing and distribution facilities, that are required for a more resilient food system and economy.
