The Global Alliance for the Future of Food invites you to join us for the celebration of Beacons of Hope: Stories from the land-water nexus—an anthology of six powerful stories on how fishers and coastal communities are organizing for justice and food sovereignty across land and water.
The multimedia stories from India, Colombia, South Africa, Uganda, Australia, and Canada—with original photography commissioned with local photographers and told through the lens of frontline leaders—demonstrate how fisher peoples and Indigenous communities are reclaiming traditional rights, ancestral resources and ways of food production.
Traditional fishers are sophisticated agents of change for food justice, playing a role critical to protecting biodiversity on land and in the water. Fisher peoples possess centuries of accumulated knowledge and solutions, while industrial fisheries and aquaculture increasingly represent an outdated model that degrades ecosystems and contrasts with strategies for a just food system.
At a time of global uncertainty, with heightened ecological, climate, and economic crises, how can funders better partner with global fisher movements? These are testimonials of hope, perseverance, and the fight for cultural identity, in the face of false solutions that take food away from people in the rapid and aggressive industrial system that commodifies food access, often through misguided “Blue Economy” frameworks that dispossess small-scale food producers.
Join us for an engaging dialogue with the leaders transforming food systems from the ground up—and learn how solidarity, long-term funding, and recognition can support movements already building better worlds.
Interpretation will be available in English, Española, Français, and Tamil.
