We are increasingly told that the food we buy is sustainable, ethical, healthy and good for the planet. Yet behind the reassuring labels, glossy marketing campaigns and carefully crafted claims lies a “truth gap” between what some food brands communicate and what their practices actually deliver. How can we begin to address the root causes in a world where it is hard to distinguish fact from fiction? How do truth, honesty and openness fit in?

Please join our ‘roots and routes’ webinar to explore the truth gap in UK food marketing. Our expert panellists will talk about why they think certain food claims and marketing are misleading; what the drivers and root causes are; and what some of the routes forward for closing that truth gap might be.

Chaired by Food Ethics Council Member Julian Baggini, our panel line-up will include:

  • Dan Parker, Chief Executive of Veg Power, and has previously worked in marketing and advertising for 25 years for many of the world’s largest food brands
  • Miles Lockwood, Director of Complaints and Investigations at the Advertising Standards Authority
  • Other speakers to be announced soon.

There will be time for participant Q&A. This event is aimed at those making or scrutinising food claims, people working in food businesses and marketing, those doing policy influencing and policymaking relating to food systems (including health, environment, social justice and animal welfare) and those with a general interest in a more truthful food environment.

This session will be followed approximately two weeks later by an online workshop, where participants will get the opportunity to dive deeper and explore potential solutions to closing the truth gap.
