The Global Alliance for the Future of Food welcomes you to join a webinar to launch our brand-new report—Toxic Dependency: How Agrochemicals Lock-In Food System Vulnerability—Pathways for Action and Resiliency.

Building on our longstanding work in exposing the fossil fuel and food systems nexus, this report, written with contributions from 26 partners, outlines the extent to which agrochemicals— which include fossil fuel-derived pesticides and synthetic fertilizers—sit at the centre of a web of interconnected crises: from the climate crisis, to biodiversity collapse, chronic disease, and farmer indebtedness. The compendium delves into the drivers and impacts of how the lock-in of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides is destabilizing food systems and offers systemic pathways to transition away from this dependency.

The war in Iran exposed the fragility of a food system entwined with fossil fuels and how farmers around the world had to grapple with skyrocketing prices of fertilizers just as planting season commenced in many parts of the world, adding to fears of a looming food security crisis. Featuring perspectives from funders, researchers, civil society, and frontline community representatives, the webinar will unpack why this moment must spark serious introspection about the status quo and the need to turbocharge funding for transitions towards agroecological approaches that are already showing powerful results in many parts of the world.

The environmental and human costs of chemical-intensive agriculture are enormous, falling hardest on frontline communities including farm workers, fishing communities, and those living near chemical factories — yet these costs remain largely invisible in mainstream narratives and policy frameworks that continue to subsidize chemical-dependent agriculture.

This webinar aims to redirect attention from immediate crises—including the fertilizer crisis —toward the systemic drivers behind them, and toward the practical solutions and alternatives that already exist. With key policy windows opening, including COP CBD in October, now is the moment to act.

Interpretation will be available in English, Española, and Français.
