Agrifood value chain employment and compensation shift with structural transformation
Using data covering most of the global economy over 1993–2021, this study reports ten stylized facts about labour reallocation amid structural transformation. As incomes grow, labour exits primary production while downstream agrifood value chain segments maintain a steady economy-wide employment share—offering jobs that pay better than farm work.

Labor shortages and farmer adaptation strategies
As labor shortages are a growing challenge in the U.S., this study explores Californian farmers’ response to labour shortages. It finds increasing wages is the most common adaptation strategy, followed by cultivation practices, adoption of labour saving technology, and the use of farm labor contractors.

US banana giant ordered to pay $38m to families of Colombian men killed by death squads
US banana giant, Chiquita Brands International must pay $38 million dollars to the families of eight Colombians murdered by a paramilitary death squad financed by the brand from 1997 to 2004, a court in Florida has found. It’s the first case of a US company held accountable for violations in another country and could inspire others to fight for corporate accountability.

Towards gender equality in forestry, livestock, fisheries and aquaculture
This review article examines the impact of gender in the forestry, livestock, fisheries and aquaculture sectors and provides empirical evidence for initiatives which have sought to redress the negative and inequitable disparities. The paper provides an overview of the major issues of women in these sectors and provides useful examples of successful programs in low- and middle-income countries. Women play a significant role in these sectors, but their work is often invisible, unregulated and vulnerable. The article calls for further efforts to eliminate gender-blind and biased policy and governance and expand and share successful initiatives.

Prioritizing labor in food systems governance work
This study explores the observed lack of recognition of labour issues within Canadian food systems governance work (the various laws, policies, and regulations that shape food systems) and seeks to identify barriers to their inclusion in future work. The authors broadly find a lack of capacity within CSOs in Canada to address food and farm workers’ issues. The authors conclude by examining potential pathways to aid food system CSOs to consider the potential benefit of investing and participating in food systems governance work to foster stronger engagement in labour issues.

India farmers to continue protest march on New Delhi
Several recent news articles have detailed the resurgence of farmer protests in India - farmers are demanding guaranteed crop prices from the government. Al Jazeera has covered the demands of the protest movement previously. It has also covered the recent failed negotiations the movement has had with the Indian government. The protesters are now marching towards New Delhi to secure crop price guarantees to protect livelihoods but face blockades and tear gas from authorities
