Read Image Resource Effects of conservation policy on China’s forest recovery This paper looks at China’s National Forest Conservation Program (NFCP) and concludes that overall, it has been successful in reforesting the country. Prior to this study, scientists did not have proof of China’s claims of forest growth and the effectiveness of the program and China has been under international pressure to scientifically report their findings. Read Image Resource The terrestrial biosphere as a net source of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere This study is the first to look at the net balance of the three major (biogenic, non-fossil fuel) greenhouse gases; carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide - for every region of earth's land masses. It analyses emissions from land use and land use change and uptakes from land and forests and concludes that the terrestrial biosphere (land and forests) is a net emitter of these greenhouse gases. Read Image Resource Do low-GHG-emission diets lead to higher nutritional quality and positive health outcomes? A systematic review of the literature This study evaluates the links between diets and health in relation to greenhouse gas emissions by reviewing 16 studies, comparing a total of 100 dietary patterns. The researchers examine how diets with reduced greenhouse gas emissions (GHGE) affected the subjects in the studies in terms of nutrient intake and health outcomes. Read Image Resource Analysis and valuation of the health and climate change cobenefits of dietary change This study, which quantifies at the global and regional level the health and environmental consequences of dietary change, argues that there are substantial health and environmental gains to be made from switching to more plant based diets. According to the research, food-related emissions could be cut by 29% if global dietary guidelines were adopted. Read Image Resource Blog-post: Global Models Must Meet Grassroots Action to Deliver Climate Solutions for Farmers In a recent blog-post on the UN’s Academic Impact website, Sonja Vermeulen and Andy Challinor write the third piece in a series on Food security and climate change entitled “Global Models Must Meet Grassroots Action to Deliver Climate Solutions for Farmers”. Read Image Resource New EU law passed allowing for promotion of school milk and fruit and vegetable consumption The EU parliament has now approved a law which will merge the separate EU school milk and fruit schemes and boost their combined annual budget from €20m to €250m a year. Read Image Resource EU Ministers decision on antibiotics use and animal welfare Ministers of the European Parliament have voted to adopt a new EU regulation aimed at improving the welfare of animals, encouraging farmers to practice good husbandry that helps prevent disease outbreaks and importantly intensify the fight against antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Read Image Resource Food Security, Gender and Resilience: Improving Smallholder and Subsistence Farming Through the integration of gender analysis into resilience thinking, this book shares field-based research insights from a collaborative, integrated project aimed at improving food security in subsistence and smallholder agricultural systems.
